Oral Hygiene

Course Overview:
This course
equips carers and support staff with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to provide effective oral care to individuals in health and social care settings. Poor oral hygiene can lead to serious health problems, including infections, nutritional issues, and reduced quality of life, especially in older adults and those with disabilities or long-term conditions.

This course supports CQC standards, person-centred care, and the promotion of dignity, comfort, and wellbeing through safe and compassionate oral hygiene support.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of oral hygiene to overall health and wellbeing

  • Recognise common oral health problems and risk factors

  • Provide safe and respectful oral care to service users, including those who are non-verbal or resistant

  • Support individuals with dentures, dry mouth, and complex needs

  • Understand infection prevention and cross-contamination in oral care

  • Record and report oral health concerns appropriately
