
Catheterisation Care for Carers
Course Overview:
This course is designed to provide care staff with the essential knowledge and confidence to support individuals with urinary catheters safely and respectfully. This training is especially relevant for carers working in residential, domiciliary, or supported living environments, and aligns with best practice guidance from the NHS, CQC, and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards.
The course promotes person-centred care, infection control, and dignity when supporting service users with catheter care needs.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
Understand what catheterisation is and why it may be used
Identify different types of urinary catheters (e.g. indwelling, suprapubic, intermittent)
Recognise the carer’s role and boundaries in catheter care
Follow correct hygiene and infection prevention procedures
Monitor catheter function and observe for complications
Support the comfort, dignity, and privacy of individuals with catheters
Know when and how to escalate concerns to clinical staff
